Foundation Launches Ectasia Registry

The ASCRS Foundation announced the launch of the two-phase project to more precisely define ectasia, determine its frequency, and identify risk factors.

The Ectasia Registry project is directed by R. Doyle Stulting, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Ophthalmology, Emory University and Chair of the ASCRS Refractive Clinical Committee.

Phase I of the project is designed to gather data on ectasia after LASIK and identify physicians and patient groups that can be used in Phase II, which will include prospective observational studies aimed at determining the incidence of this complication and more precisely quantifying the impact of preoperative factors. “Because the Registry may allow identification of risk factors that are not currently recognized, it is a giant step forward in addressing one of the most challenging complications of LASIK that we face today,” Dr. Stulting said.

“As LASIK becomes the standard method of correcting refractive errors, refractive surgeons are working together to make the procedure as safe and predictable as possible for the patients we serve. Sharing information about ectasia and devising ways to prevent it will help us reach that goal.”

The ASCRS International Ectasia Registry will be housed on its own Web site, www.ectasiaregistry.com, as well as have links to it from the ASCRS home page, www.ascrs.org and other organizations. Physicians and researchers will be able to register and immediately submit data.
