EyeConnect Monthly Platinum Member Spotlight: David Crandall, MD
Through EyeConnect and its app, EyeConnect 365, ASCRS members can engage with colleagues daily, whether initiating discussions on a range of topics, sharing experiences or collaborating on ideas, all from the comforts of their homes or offices. Each month, ASCRS recognizes an EyeConnect Platinum Member based on his/her extensive contributions to the community. The August recipient is David Crandall, MD, of West Bloomfield, MI, who has been active on the forum since 2009.
“I’m constantly telling my colleagues to get involved in EyeConnect,” he said. “It’s a place where you can easily interact with many of the world's leaders in the field to get quick answers to any questions you might have, from very basic to very advanced.”
Although Dr. Crandall is a third-generation ophthalmologist, it was not his initial career plan. “I had planned on engineering or math, but I realized I wanted a more direct connection with people,” he said. “What finally tipped the scales was seeing how much my dad and his friends love what they do, which is something I did not always see in other fields.”
During his fellowship with Henry Ford Hospital, he was approached to stay following his training and is currently the co-director of the hospital’s Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery Center. “Most of my clinic is based on glaucoma, cataract and complex anterior segment surgery,” said Dr. Crandall, who also serves as the glaucoma fellowship director. “The opportunity to work in such a great department and to be so involved in resident education has been a perfect fit for me.”
While Dr. Crandall engages with colleagues through his participation in educational and outreach activities, he still finds EyeConnect a valuable resource for networking and conversing with peers on subjects of interest. “The discussions about different approaches to new techniques is tremendously helpful; everyone comes up with their own tips and tricks to make the transition easier, and, with the collaborative atmosphere, everyone is sharing those tips,” he said. “I have also gotten many patient referrals based on discussions in EyeConnect.”
Join Dr. Crandall and your colleagues in the conversation today and see what insights you can gain or share on topics including cataract/refractive, retina/vitreous, business practices and the latest advancements. The monthly Platinum Member is chosen among the Platinum ribbon achievers, who have reached over 6,000 engagement points in their EyeConnect “lifetime.” Additionally, recipients are chosen based on their participation on the various discussion boards in a given month. The Platinum Member receives acknowledgement on the EyeConnect website, a personalized EyeConnect travel mug and a certificate and letter of recognition.
