EyeConnect Monthly Platinum Member Spotlight: David Leach, MD, FACS
One of the most valuable benefits of being part of an organization is the ability to network and engage with colleagues, initiating discussions, sharing experiences and collaborating on ideas. For ASCRS membership, this is available daily from the comfort of one’s home or office through the online discussion forum, EyeConnect, and the EyeConnect 365 app. Each month, ASCRS recognizes an EyeConnect Platinum Member, and the June recipient is David Leach, MD, FACS, of Moscow, ID, based on his extensive contributions to the community for the past 12 years.
“Imagine having a practice partner you can turn to who has the experience of a thousand surgeons; that is what EyeConnect is to me,” said Dr. Leach. “I practice in a rural setting and on several occasions, EyeConnect has been a lifeline to surgical and clinical pearls from experienced surgeons and clinicians, and my patient care has improved as a result.”
Raised in Oklahoma, he was introduced to ophthalmology at an early age by his father, who worked as a scrub tech for a group of ophthalmologists as one of two jobs. “I remember him handing me a small plastic cassette and inside, he explained, was a small device they were now implanting in cataract surgery patients called an intraocular lens. I remember marveling at the small lens, and it sat in a special spot in my desk for years,” said Dr. Leach.
He ultimately made his career decision while completing his general surgery internship at University of Kentucky Medical Center, where he continued with his ophthalmology residency. It was in the fall of 2001 that Dr. Leach said he had the good fortune of starting his own practice from “scratch,” ClearView Eye Clinic & Surgery Center, that today has two offices, four doctors, nearly 50 employees, an audiology service and optical shops. A large focus of the practice is giving back to the community.
Married for 32 years, Dr. Leach and his wife, Ann, enjoy the time they can spend with their five adult children. When he has the opportunity, he takes full advantage of the abundant natural resources surrounding him and can often be seen fishing on his drift boat, chasing bass, steelhead and salmon in addition to gardening, coffee roasting and beekeeping. A fan of the culinary arts, he also has a small wine collection.
Dr. Leach is one of the many physicians you can participate with in real-time discussions on a range of topics—from cornea and retina/vitreous to business practices—on EyeConnect today.
“What originally was a small collection of surgeons and clinicians has grown into a very active group of professionals who go out of their way to help their colleagues and have been more than generous with their time when I have faced patient care-related challenges,” said Dr. Leach, who typically engages in cataract and refractive surgery discussions. “While there is significant difference of opinions on issues such as FLACS [femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery], there is camaraderie and mutual respect that temper the lively discussions and occasional debates.”
The monthly Platinum Member is chosen among the Platinum ribbon achievers, who have reached over 6,000 engagement points in their EyeConnect “lifetime.” Additionally, recipients are chosen based on their participation on the various discussion boards in a given month. The Platinum Member receives acknowledgement on the EyeConnect website, a personalized EyeConnect travel mug and a certificate and letter of recognition.
