EyeConnect Monthly Platinum Member Spotlight: Matthew Runde, MD
Through EyeConnect and its app, EyeConnect 365, ASCRS members can engage with colleagues daily, whether initiating discussions on a range of topics, sharing experiences or collaborating on ideas, all from the comforts of their homes or offices. Each month, ASCRS recognizes an EyeConnect Platinum Member based on his/her extensive contributions to the community. The July recipient is Matthew Runde, MD of Onalaska, WI.
“I started as a ‘lurker,’ but the knowledge gained here has helped me to participate more fully, offering some advice of my own from time to time,” he said. “Watching surgical videos from expert eye surgeons around the world has definitely upped my game, giving me confidence to add new procedures and techniques to my practice.”
A native of southeastern Wisconsin, Dr. Runde knew from an early age that he wanted to study medicine. It was during his second year of medical school at the University of Wisconsin that he decided to pursue ophthalmology. “The first cataract operation I watched left me in awe at the elegance and efficiency of the procedure, even back in the early 1990s,” he said. “A few weeks spent on rotation in an ophthalmology clinic reinforced to me how precious a service we offer; eye care is endlessly challenging and gratifying.”
When he is not practicing at Gundersen Health System, Dr. Runde enjoys cooking for family and friends, ballroom dancing with his wife, Maria, and traveling with their two sons.
Dr. Runde also spends time daily connecting with and learning from his peers on EyeConnect. “It is a priceless resource for real-time feedback on problem cases, surgical pearls and words of practical wisdom from some of the most talented eye surgeons in the world,” he said. “It provides timely and specific information that cannot be easily gained anywhere else.”
Topics on EyeConnect range from cataract/refractive and retina/vitreous to business practices. “Most of us only face complex anterior segment cases occasionally, and it is invaluable to have personalized advice from surgeons with vast experience with these cases to help us shorten the learning curve,” said Dr. Runde. “Through the tireless efforts of the members of EyeConnect, I have definitely improved my patients’ outcomes and improved my ability to assist my colleagues.”
