On Tuesday, September 12, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. EDT, CMS will host a webinar to provide an overview on the new Medicare card. Topics will include the following:
- Why there will be a new card;
- What to expect during the transition period; and
- How CMS is reaching out to providers and people with Medicare including a timeline for the new cards and key points to remember
Register for the webinar here.
As a reminder, CMS is urging providers to prepare for a provision under MACRA that requires CMS to remove the Social Security Number (SSN) from Medicare cards due to concerns of identity theft. The new cards will use a unique, randomly assigned number, called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI), to replace the Social Security based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) currently used on the Medicare card. CMS will begin mailing new cards in April 2018 and is expected to replace all Medicare cards by April 2019.
