2017 MIPS Submission Deadline is Approaching; Data May Be Entered in CMS QPP Site Until March 31, 2018 to Avoid a 2019 Penalty

As we have reported, CMS’ QPP submission portal is now available for reporting 2017 MIPS performance data, which will impact 2019 payments. Physicians and groups may use the portal to report 2017 data for the Advancing Care Information (ACI) and Improvement Activities categories of MIPS. Quality data from EHR systems in QRDA III format may also be uploaded to the system. Performance data must be for dates of service January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2017. All MIPS 2017 data must be submitted by March 31, 2018.

As a reminder, 2017 was the first performance year of MIPS. CMS designated 2017 as the first transition year, and as such, physicians may avoid the 4% MIPS penalty in 2019 by submitting minimal data for 2017. If physicians or groups have not already submitted some data—such as one quality measure on one patient—they may still go to the CMS QPP submission site and report either:

  • One improvement activity, or
  • The base measures of the Advancing Care Information category.

The system uses the same Enterprise Identity Management (EIDM) credentials as previous quality reporting programs. If you need to update your information, visit CMS' Enterprise Portal. Click here for CMS' user guide.

Please note: If you submitted your data through the IRIS Registry, you do not need to use CMS' submission site.

Additionally, CMS will be hosting three “Office Hours” sessions over the next several weeks to prepare physicians and groups for submission. CMS subject matter experts will answer commonly asked questions about CMS’ QPP submission portal, as well as answer attendees’ questions live. Registrants will also have the opportunity to email their questions prior to the sessions. Registration and information about the calls can be found below:
