AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale (RVS) Update Committee (RUC) Doctor Sends Letter to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) Clarifying RUCs Policies on Misvalued Codes
Dr. Barbara Levy, chair of the AMA/Specialty Society RVS Update Committee, sent a letter to MedPac, in response to comments made at the MedPAC March meeting about the potential to use the work of the AMA/Specialty Society RVS Update Committee to fund a new monthly payment to primary care practitioners.
Dr. Levy pointed out that the studies MedPAC cited to demonstrate the need for further misvalued code reductions are outdated and do not reflect the significant payment modifications that have taken place over the past few years. She also noted that the assumption that additional savings can be wrung out of the misvalued codes initiative without any damage to Medicare beneficiaries’ access to care is unrealistic. Finally, the letter states it is important to consider any call for more over-valued code savings in the context of the other legislative and regulatory changes that are underway such as sequestration and the SGR patch.
ASCRS agrees with these arguments and will keep you appraised of any updates in MedPACs recommendations. For more information, read the full letter.
