Home > A Note from David F. Chang, MD, and the ASCRS Foundation
The devastating earthquake in Nepal has left over 7,000 people dead, 10,000 injured, and millions impacted.
Kathmandu’s Tilganga Eye Hospital is the home base of the Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) NGO, and a strong partner and friend of the ASCRS Foundation. Under the leadership of HCP’s co-founder, Sanduk Ruit, MD, Tilganga’s ophthalmologists and staff immediately organized and mobilized relief operations in some of the worst-affected rural areas. Two decades of providing primary rural eye care and cataract surgery have established strong ties between Tilganga and many of these hard hit local communities. Teams of Tilganga staff have been preparing and delivering emergency medical kits, food, and relief materials to different destinations with the same efficiency and ingenuity that they’ve used to organize their high volume, rural eye surgery camps.
In the days following a natural disaster, we realize that you are overwhelmed with appeals from charitable organizations. If you would like to make a donation, we believe that supporting Tilganga’s on-the-ground relief efforts is a worthy and effective cause. Dr. Ruit is one of the most amazing and capable ophthalmologists I’ve ever met. He’s created a unique organization of dedicated ophthalmologists and staff with the experience and capacity to deliver relief to some of the most inaccessible, but neediest areas.
Sanduk Ruit reports from Nepal," This is the worst natural disaster in my lifetime. The scale of human casualty is enormous, and tens of thousands are left homeless. Some of the worst affected areas are rural communities, which Tilganga has been serving for many years; hence we understand the locality very well. There are very hearty and generous messages from friends all over the world who want to be helpful. I would appeal to all our friends who have loved our work and this country and its people. Many heartfelt thanks for the compassion you have shown in such an unforeseen moment." (more from Sanduk Ruit).
