Purpose:
To report the visual acuity outcomes and patient satisfaction outcomes with extended depth of focus (EDOF) and multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).
Methods:
Retrospective review of patients who underwent refractive lens exchange (RLE) from 6/30/2014 to 6/30/2016 at a large refractive cataract surgical practice (Optical Express, Glasgow, UK). Inclusion criteria included patients who had a preoperative and postoperative manifest refraction, had undergone RLE in both eyes with a multifocal or EDOF IOL, and completed a preoperative and at least 1 postoperative patient reported outcomes (PRO) questionnaire.
Results:
5092 patients underwent RLE and 4128, 3026, and 2006 patients completed the 1, 3, and 12-month PRO questionnaires, respectively. At postop month 3, 86% achieved a binocular UDVA of 20/20 and 99% achieved 20/40. 69% and 96% achieved a binocular UNVA of J1 and J3, respectively. Regarding satisfaction with uncorrected vision, 69.4% were satisfied or very satisfied preop, while 85.7%, 84.0%, and 87.3% were at 1, 3, and 12-months postop (p<0.001). patients="" reported="" an="" increase="" in="" visual="" symptoms="" postop.="" 76%="" had="" no="" glare="" preop="" compared="" to="" 40.2%,="" 40.8%="" and="" 52.1%="" at="" 1,="" 3,="" and="" 12="" months="" postop.="" 0.8%="" had="" severe="" glare="" preop="" compared="" to="" 6.5%,="" 6.4%,="" and="" 5.2%="" at="" 1,="" 3,="" and="" 12="" months="" postop="">0.001).><0.001).>0.001).>
Conclusions:
Multifocal and EDOF IOLs are able to provide good distance and near uncorrected acuity. At all timepoints postoperatively 83-88% of patients reported that they were satisfied with their vision. Patients reported an increase in glare symptoms after implantation of the multifocal and EDOF IOLs.
