Aetna’s Prior Authorization Policy was Rescinded Because of You

Good afternoon,

Today I want to take a moment to express my sincerest gratitude to all ASCRS and ASOA members for their grassroots efforts that helped rescind a nationwide Medicare Advantage prior authorization policy that delayed patient access to sight-restoring surgery. As you most likely have heard, as of July 1, Aetna officially dropped its harmful and overly burdensome prior authorization policy for cataract surgery in nearly every state. Aetna's prior authorization policy went into effect last July, and ASCRS and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) immediately engaged in a targeted advocacy effort and a nationwide public affairs campaign, resulting in over 200 targeted media placements in national media markets that helped educate the public about the negative impact this policy had on physicians and practices, as well as the dangers of delayed and denied care for Aetna beneficiaries.

To many, it seemed unimaginable that one of the nation's largest health insurers would repeal a prior authorization policy that impacted so many patients after it had committed to putting one in place. Yet thousands in the ophthalmic community came together to share their experiences and patient stories, flooding the inboxes of Aetna leadership, public media outlets, and lawmakers.

Seeing this policy overturned is a testament to what we can do when we come together to defend our profession and protect our patients. Our Society has never been stronger, and I am humbled to be a part of this outstanding community of surgeons and practice administrators. ASCRS remains committed to fighting unnecessary prior authorization policies on your behalf to ensure the best visual outcomes and quality of life for your patients.

Thank you again for your support and advocacy. This win belongs to you.
