Opportunities to Make Ophthalmic Care More Sustainable

This week, during Cataract Awareness Month, ASCRS is focusing on sustainability as one of the ways to take #ASCRScatarACTION. Earlier this year EyeSustain, a global coalition of organizations and individuals, was established to collaborate to make ophthalmic care more sustainable, providing facts and resources to the ophthalmic community.

Here are a few facts:

  • The healthcare sector accounts for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions every year.
  • Ophthalmology has the highest procedural volumes of any specialty.
  • More than 90% of ophthalmologists believe OR waste is excessive.

Read this editorial from David F. Chang, MD, discussing “needless” waste related to cataract surgery and the opportunity for sustainability. Visit the EyeSustain website to learn more about all of these efforts and opportunities to make ophthalmic care both economically and environmentally more sustainable. And keep up with ASCRS on its social media platforms this week for more insights on sustainability within ophthalmology.

2022 ASCRS Foundation Operation Sight Volunteer of the Year: Jeffrey Levenson, MD

This year the ASCRS Foundation recognized 10 Operation Sight Volunteers of the Year. Among them is Jeffrey Levenson, MD. Through his work with the Foundation’s Operation Sight, Dr. Levenson has provided more than 100 charitable cataract surgeries to underserved individuals in his community in Florida.

“There's a reason you chose to be an ophthalmologist. Amidst the daily problems of staffing an office, running a business and meeting a payroll, it's often easy to lose sight of that reason.  Operation Sight brings me back every week to the reason I do what I do. It's the purest expression of my best self. It reminds me daily of the remarkable magic trick every ophthalmologist knows, and its capacity to change the world.” —Jeffrey Levenson, MD, 2022 ASCRS Foundation Operation Sight Volunteer of the Year
